Southfield Mayor Lawrence Wins US House Seat
DETROIT (AP) - Democrat Brenda Lawrence has won the U.S. House seat from the 14th District.
The popular Southfield mayor defeated a little-known Republican challenger and two other candidates in Tuesday's election.
The 59-year-old Lawrence was gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero's running mate in 2010. She has been Southfield's mayor since 2001 and also served on the city council.
The Republican Party all but ceded this year's general election to the Democrats by placing a political unknown, Pontiac resident Christina Barr, on the ballot.
The 14th District leans Democratic and includes parts of Detroit, the Grosse Pointes, Southfield, Lathrup Village, Oak Park, Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield and Pontiac. The seat is being vacated by Democrat Gary Peters, who ran for U.S. Senate.
