Are You At Risk For Breast Or Ovarian Cancer? Beaumont To Host Educational BRCA Event Friday

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Knowledge is power when it comes to learning your risk for certain cancers.

Genetic testing can help determine a person's risk for developing certain cancers like breast and ovarian cancer — but the thought of getting tested can be scary, and once you know the test results it can be confusing trying to determine the next step to take.

Heidi Owen, a a genetics counselor with Beaumont Hospital, says they are hoping to clear that up.

"We found after to talking with patients that they wanted to have an outlet to talk with individuals, gain information regarding the BRC1 or BRC2 gene," Owen said.

To that end, Beaumont is holding a one day conference on Friday for people with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.

The symposium will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak in the Administration Building, classroom 2, 3711 W. 13 Mile Road.

The event will address many topics, including:

  • cancer genetics overview
  • cancer risk reduction/management
  • updates in breast surgery and imaging
  • updates in gynecologic cancer risks and management
  • updates in pancreatic cancer risk management
  • targeted treatment
  • healthy diet/healthy living
  • mindfulness/relaxation

Admission is free, but registration is required. To register, call 800-633-7377 or go online at classes.beaumont.edu and search for "BRCA."  A complimentary lunch will be provided.
