Detroit Firefighters Rescue Small Dog, 4 People From Burning Home [PHOTOS]

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit firefighters have extinguished a blaze a home on the east side where four people and a small dog were trapped inside.

The fire took off Thursday morning at a home on Tacoma Street near Hayes Street, in a neighborhood near Gratiot Avenue and East State Fair Street.

Officials say a passerby called 911 to say he saw smoke billowing out of the house. Firefighters quickly responded to the scene and rescued four people, as well as a small dog.

No one was injured, but the dog appears to have suffered smoke inhalation. Firefighters used oxygen masks to help the pooch -- named Cream -- breathe.

"I guess the dog was in the room where probably where the fire started at so I guess the smoke actually got to her. She's a shih-tzu poodle, she's three and a half years old now," Michael Johnson, who owns the home, told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "She's still breathing, I'm hoping she's alright. I just don't want to go over there and see her all like that."

After she was stabilized, Cream was taken to a veterinarian hospital for further observation.

Johnson said one of the residents might have been using a hot plate in their room, which could have sparked the fire.

Officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
