Plans Move Ahead For New Suburban Detroit Mosque

PLYMOUTH TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Plans are moving forward for a new mosque in suburban Detroit that was opposed by some area residents who cited concerns including the potential for increased traffic.

Hundreds of people gathered Wednesday night at the Plymouth Township Hall for a planning commission meeting on the issue. Most of those in attendance voiced support for the Rayyan Center project that will be built on now-vacant land south of 5 Mile Road and east of Pilot Drive, between Beck and Sheldon roads.

The township conducted a study that found the traffic impact would be minimal. Approval of the project drew applause from the crowd.

The site was once residential before it was changed to allow other uses. Representatives for the mosque must get additional site plans approved by the board later.
