Child Struck And Killed By Amtrak Train In Wayne

WAYNE (WWJ) -- Police have confirmed to WWJ Newsradio 950 that a child was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Wayne on Sunday.

The incident happened at Venoy Road south of Michigan Avenue just before noon on Sunday.

According to Amtrak, the Wolverine train carrying 92 passengers had just left Pontiac on its way to Chicago.

Matt Gallagher, a man who was heading back home to Chicago on the train, said that the train came to a quick stop shortly after boarding in Dearborn. Amtrak personnel then told them what happened.

"We had been on the train maybe 10 or 15 minutes, and it stopped maybe slightly more suddenly than normal, but it wasn't like a sudden stop or anything like that," Gallagher said. "That was it, and we stood.

"They made the announcement and then they started walking the isles going up to every passenger individually and explained that a pedestrian had been hit," Gallagher said. "They said it differently to me, my wife and kids than they would have to someone else, which I really appreciate."

Gallagher said that the passengers couldn't see anything from inside the cabin.

"We've seen one or two police officers walk by, I did see one ambulance drive by on what you could call the shoulder of the track, not with the lights going or anything like that," Gallagher said.

There are no reported injuries to passengers or crew members.
