Reflections On Thanksgiving, The "Perfect Holiday" (Video)

By Edward Cardenas

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - When it comes to holidays, people find Thanksgiving the "perfect holiday."

Hob Nobble Gobble attendees took a moment from their celebrations at the annual fundraiser for The Parade Company to share what the holiday means to them.

For Detroit City Councilman Andre Spivey Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday season, a day to get together with family and a deeper meaning.

"Being thankful for what I have and always looking out for those less fortunate," he said.

Thanksgiving is a day for family, and giving thanks, for Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. After being involved in a serious accident in 2012, and nearly losing his life, he said "the whole world is different."

"Thanksgiving is a chance to get together with family," said Patterson, who now favors spending time with loved ones over being at political events. "Thanksgiving means that all my kids (are) in one room and I keep them there as long as I can."

Andrew Richner, a member of the University of Michigan Board of Regents, calls Thanksgiving the "perfect holiday" for a number of reasons.

"There is no shopping, there's no pressure to get out in the stores, you don't have to do the Christmas card stuff," he said. "It is just simply sitting down with the family having a nice meal."
