Power Lost To 7,000 Homes, Businesses After Apparent Sub-Station Failure

DETROIT (WWJ) - DTE Energy now saying it may not be until late morning before power can be restored to several neighborhoods now off the grid on Detroit's west side since the pre-dawn hours.

An apparent sub-station failure knocked out power reports WWJ's Ron Dewey.

Power to 7,000 homes, businesses along the Southfield Freeway corridor was out early Monday morning for the return to work after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Dave Samuel woke up with a house full of kids in the dark -- no power to get the school day underway.

"They got to go school, breakfast - I've got the oldest one getting ready for high school, she about to graduate so it's difficult," said Samuel, "and I got to go to work in the dark. No furnace, no heat ... oh, man that's the worst part!"

As John Jensen discovered when he woke up to no power, even the most mundane of tasks become a challenge:

"Try finding your keys in pitch black," asked Jensen. "Not a good feeling. No alarm clock, no furnace, it's cold. But it happens sometimes."

One resident said he was getting ready for work by candlelight.
