AAA Michigan: Gas Prices Fall 18 Cents In Week

DEARBORN, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - AAA Michigan says statewide gas prices have dropped about 18 cents a gallon in the last week to the lowest average since August 2010.

The auto club says the average price per gallon of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline was $2.68 on Sunday. That's about 56 cents less than it was a year ago.

More and more gas stations are showing prices below $2.50 a gallon reports WWJ's Ron Dewey.

At the Marathon on Telegraph and 7 Mile road the price for unleaded regular gas is $2.45 which is music to Melvin Stamps' ears.

"I feel like it helps me a lot to fill up for less money, keep a little bit more in my pocket and try to keep a little bit more in the bank," said Stamps. "It all around good for me."

A bigger oil supply and a stronger U-S dollar overseas is helping the cause these days. Metro Detroit drivers like Evonne Mitchells say "works for me!"

Mitchells says she'll use the saved money for groceries and utilities.

Cliff Beard calls the $2.45 a gallon price 'phenonmenal.'

"I wish it was lower than it was, like how it was back when I was a kid, but now, it's managible. I'm not going to complain."

Dearborn-based AAA Michigan surveys fuel costs at 2,800 Michigan gas stations daily. It says the cheapest price was $2.62 a gallon in the Flint area. The most expensive price was about $2.81 a gallon in the Marquette area.

The auto club expects prices to continue falling another 15 to 20 cents in the coming weeks as retail prices catch up with decreases in crude oil and wholesale gasoline costs.
