After Years In The Dark, Detroit's Whitney Building Lights Up Grand Circus Park

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit's historic David Whitney Building was the site of a special re-lighting ceremony Monday night after spending the last decade in the dark.

David Di Rita of Whitney Partners -- developers of the project -- spoke about what the revitalization of the building means for the city's future.

"Its return reminds us about what made us great in the first place," Di Rita said. "It was not the buildings themselves, but the spirit of the people who built them. This is the spirit of David Whitney, and it is this spirit that will truly light the way to Detroit's next Golden Age."

The 19-story icon, located in the heart of Grand Circus Park, has undergone a $92 million renovation, which includes the opening of a new boutique hotel this week and over 100 apartments later in December, in what is Detroit's fastest-growing residential district.

There will be 108 apartments, a restaurant, a bar and a grab-and-go food shop.
