Former Cass Tech QB Jayru Campbell Gets Probation For Assaulting Ex-Girlfriend

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's another year on probation for former Detroit Cass Tech football star Jayru Campbell.

Campbell was sentenced Wednesday morning on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge that was brought just hours after he was released from jail following a 60 day sentence for body-slamming a security guard at the school.

Judge Ruth Carter also ordered Campbell to be tested for steroid use, undergo a psychiatric evaluation, attend anger management classes and enter into a mentoring program run by former Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, who was present for sentencing.

"I've gone to visit him a couple times since he's been in jail and he knows he's made a mistake, more than once, and he also knows he can't make another mistake," Bing told WWJ outside of the courtroom.

Campbell in November admitted he assaulted a 17-year-old girl, his then-girlfriend, in a school stairwell Sept. 12 over a dispute involving her phone. In pleading guilty, he was sentenced to seven months in jail for violating his probation in the previous assault case with the security guard. In exchange for his plea, felony charges of intent to do bodily harm and unarmed robbery were dropped.

The incident with his ex-girlfriend, like the one involving the security guard, was caught on the school's surveillance system. Video allegedly shows Campbell grabbing the phone, pushing the girl and then grabbing her around her neck. Campbell allegedly then grabbed her around her waist and picked her up off the ground. It reportedly took a group of Campbell's fellow football players to pull him off the girl.

In May, a judge sentenced Campbell to 60 days in jail after he admitted to body-slamming the security guard. The sentence was delayed so Campbell could finish summer school classes.

As a quarterback, Campbell led Cass Tech to back to back state titles in 2011 and 2012. He had committed to play at Michigan State University in 2015, but later changed his mind.
