Eastern Market Prepares For 2015

By Edward Cardenas

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - Eastern Market looks to enter 2015 with enhanced infrastructure and expanded programming.

During the past year there was road, bridge and parking lot construction, but according to Dan Carmody, these projects will be wrapped up for the coming year.

Additionally, the second phase of the Dequindre Cut will meet up with the Midtown Loop which will a new greenway system through the market.

Carmody added work on Shed 5 will be completed in the next month with a community kitchen, Kid Rock Community Commons Room and DTE Energy Plaza.

These improvements will offer amenities and will give people "a nice place to sit," and "there will be kitchen space for budding food entrepreneurs and kitchen space for engaging food and nutrition kitchen literacy programming that we are very excited to be adding as the year unfolds in 2015," said Carmody.

The market will continue to feature Flower Day the Sunday after Mother's Day; the Saturday Market from 6 a.m. - 4 p.m.; the Tuesday Market will return for its fifth year and the Sunday Market - launched in 2014 - returns for a second year.

"We think we give people a chance to celebrate long-time traditions also participate in cutting edge regional food system development," he added.

And despite the change in seasons, the market is open Saturdays during the winter.

"We have a very nice winter market this year," Carmody said. "Shed 5 heat is up and running and its dang near toasty in there so come on down."
