Snow In The Forecast As Bitter Cold Settles In Across Metro Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - Single-digit temperatures, icy pavement and light snow greeted metro Detroit commuters on this back to work and school Monday — and much more snow is on the way.

It was 9 degrees, feeling like 5 below zero, at 10 a.m. in Detroit; and AccuWeather Meteorologist Dr. Joe Sobel says it's going to be bitterly cold all week long.

Sobel says the metro Detroit area will see one to three inches of snow overnight into Tuesday morning.

"We could see some lucky spots getting a little more, but the point is it'll be slippery for tomorrow morning's rush hour," Sobel said.

The recent bitter cold weather has already been blamed for at least five deaths across the state.

A passenger died after a crash Sunday in Escanaba where icy roads were a factor. Two crashes Sunday killed three people in western Michigan. A woman died in a Sanilac County crash Saturday.

"Drive slowly ... the greatest cause of accidents is people drive too fast," said Bob Hoepfner with the Macomb County Road Commission. "Drive slowly, cautiously and leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you and I think you can prevent a lot of accidents."

Local nonprofit homeless service providers have joined with the city of Detroit to open the warming centers, offering residents a break from the cold weather now through March 31.

Cass Community Social Services has 50 beds and provides services for families only. Operation Get Down near 94 and Grand Boulevard has 200 beds for women, men and children.

The Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries in downtown Detroit has 100 beds for men only,

Detroit Public Library branches will be open and available to the public as respite centers. The Recreation Department will also have four respite sites this winter during normal center operating hours. [More warming center information HERE].
