Macy's Could Be Last Anchor Store To Leave Northland Mall

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- The last anchor store in Northland Mall could soon close it's doors with word that Macy's could soon be leaving.

Macy's has been one of the largest anchor stores at Northland Mall since it first opened its doors as Hudson's back in 1954. Southfield mayor Donald Fracassi is optimistic that if the store does leave, the area can rebound.

"The population that is growing around Northland, the values of property are growing around Northland -- so those are all good signs," Fracassi said. "I'm looking really forward to seeing a new Northland."

Target has announced plans to leave Northland next month. The mall has been in receivership since the fall when it went into default on a $31 million loan.

"It's actually a good time to reevaluate Northland and do something great there," Fracassi said. "The location is unbelievable, there aren't too many malls that have a bus station like we just built there at Northland to bring people to that site."

There is no word on when Macy's plans to officially leave the mall.
