Warming Centers Open To Give Relief To Detroit's Homeless

DETROIT (WWJ) -- With no sign of a break in the cold weather, Detroit has teamed up with local homeless shelters to open warming centers for the season.

Faith Fowler is the Executive Director of Cass Community Social Services and says they do whatever they have to do for safety.

"Anytime it's 10 degrees or below, we feel like we shouldn't close at all," Fowler said. "If at 8 a.m. when it normally closes it's 10 degrees or below we stay open until noon. If at noon it's still frigid, we're open all day. It's just protective because it's dangerous for people to be out."

The city also partnered with Operation Get Down and Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, which will stay open until March 31st.

Fowler said that the centers have been helping more and more children, who have a harder time gathering good enough protective clothing to keep them warm in the winter.

"What we could use in addition to hats and socks and gloves is fresh fruit -- we're always trying to make sure that we have apples or oranges or something in addition to canned foods, just because it helps you stay healthy," Fowler said.
