Historic Strathmore Hotel To Be Revitalized, Reinvented As Midtown Residential Space

DETROIT (WWJ) -  A vacant and rundown building in the thriving Midtown Detroit area will get a new lease on life as residential living space.

The historic Strathmore Hotel closed in 1964 and has been left in disrepair for decades. Approximately $28 million will be pumped into the revitalization of the building which will house luxury apartments.

Sonya Delley is with Invest Detroit and she says this will help the Midtown area grow.

Strathmore (1) VThomas"Density is a necessity, when you are trying to revitalize and stabilize any community, especially an urban community, we are very fortunate right now because demand is outpacing supply in this community, that is not going unrealized," said Delley.

"The notion of taking this fund the redevelopment of this blighted, obsolete building into the creation of 130 residential units is on point," she said.

The units will have updated appliances, new features, new flooring, new heating and cooling systems, "really state of the art coming to a building built from 1924," said Hamilton Anderson Associates' Rainy Hamilton. "It's always a challenge because these buildings are not square - they are not plum - so you really have to make allowances so things will fit properly."

The Strathmore Hotel on Alexandrine at Woodward was built in 1924 and served as a hotel for forty years - it was officially closed off in 2006 after falling into disrepair and becoming a haven for prostitutes and drug dealers.
