Police: Pot-Smoking Driver Hits School Bus, Injures 4
THORNAPPLE TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Michigan State Police say a marijuana-smoking SUV driver rear-ended a stopped school bus with its flashers on, injuring three children and the bus driver.
The crash happened around 3 p.m. Thursday in Barry County's Thornapple Township, about 15 miles southeast of Grand Rapids. Reports say the bus was stopped, letting off students when it struck by a Pontiac Aztek.
The bus was from Caledonia Public Schools. State police say three students ages 13 to 14 and the bus driver complained of back or neck pain and were taken to hospitals in Grand Rapids for examination. The remaining children were transferred to another bus at the scene.
Police reportedly smelled burnt marijuana coming from the SUV and also found drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.
The driver, whose name has not yet been released, was arrested for possession of marijuana and driving under the influence of marijuana. Police ordered a blood draw on the suspect to determine the level of marijuana in their system.
