Snapchat Launches New Feature With News, Videos, Articles

By Edward Cardenas

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - Snapchat launched a new feature Tuesday which provides more depth to the social media site known for sharing photos that disappear after a short period of time.

The Discover is now available for users with news stories and videos with content from CNN, sports headlines from ESPN and comedy clips from Comedy Central.

"Snapchat Discover is a new way to explore Stories from different editorial teams. It's the result of collaboration with world-class leaders in media to build a storytelling format that puts the narrative first," Snapchat wrote in a blog post.

Users of Snapchat can access Discover off the menu screen. Once the feature is open, there are 12 currently channels to choose from on the page.

The service also relies on editors, not algorithms, to select the biggest stories and most in-depth posts.

"Social media companies tell us what to read based on what's most recent or most popular. We see it differently. We count on editors and artists, not clicks and shares, to determine what's important," Snapchat wrote.

To access content, users can tap to open a channel, swipe left to skim through Snaps, and swipe up on a Snap to learn more with long-form videos and articles, Snapchat stated.

"Discover is new, but familiar," Snapchat wrote in post. "That's because Stories are at the core – there's a beginning, middle, and end so that editors can put everything in order. Every edition is refreshed after 24 hours – because what's new today is history tomorrow."

According a story by CNET, Facebook attempted to purchase increasingly popular Snapchat for $3 billion, but was unsuccessful. Additionally,  ComScore said that Snapchat was the third most popular social-media app among people between the ages of 18 and 34.
