Detroit Family Loses 2nd Son To Injuries Sustained In Deadly House Fire

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Detroit family has now lost two of their sons due to injuries sustained in a house fire.

Cortez Burrell, 17, died Monday morning, according to Detroit Receiving Hospital spokesman Alton Gunn. He suffered smoke inhalation and third-degree burns in fire that earlier claimed the life of his brother, 12-year-old Quartez Burrell.

Detroit police investigators say they believe the fire, early Friday morning at a home on Lyford Avenue, near City Airport along McNichols Road and Van Dyke Avenue, was caused by an electrical wiring problem in the first-floor living room near a staircase.

The boys' parents made it out of the home, but the brothers were trapped on the second floor of the home. When firefighters got the boys out they were rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital — but both were badly burned and in cardiac arrest.

MLive.com reports Detroit Cristo Rey High School notified parents and students about the death. He was a member of the class of 2015.

Neighbors said the boys were both active in sports and will be missed.
