Black History Month: Championing The Education Of Young People

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Dr. Glenda Price is president of the Detroit Public Schools Foundation is a champion of education and of young people.

The Temple University graduate eventually ended up joining the faculty there. She then served as president of Marygrove College in Detroit and retired in 2006.

"Education opens the world, it opens your mind, it provides opportunities," Price said. "I was so very pleased to have the opportunity to begin an undergraduate search program. We initiated a Study Abroad program, we returned sports to the college campus, we reopened the residence hall because it had been closed."

Price liked to study the cardinals, blue jays and woodpeckers as they fly about in her backyard, but retirement didn't last too long -- she became president of the DPS Foundation two and a half years ago.

"You just get up every morning and you do what you think is right today," Price said. "That's exactly the way I live my life."

Price says that it is the most challenging position she has ever had because she's working in a multitude of arenas at the same time, including everything from fundraising and grant making to a public relations role.
