Arctic Deep Freeze Grips Michigan, Lows Drop To Minus 27

NEWBERRY, Mich. (WWJ/AP) — An Arctic cold front has settled over Michigan, sending temperatures plunging to minus 27 in the Upper Peninsula and minus 22 in the northern Lower Peninsula.

The deep freeze Sunday came with an easing of the snowy and windy conditions that forced a number of Upper Peninsula roads to close. State police say U.S. 2 now is open between Rapid River and Manistique.

The National Weather Service reports a Sunday overnight low of minus 27 at Newberry in central upper Michigan. The low reached minus 22 at Pellston in the northern Lower Peninsula, while Detroit's low hit minus 7.

Brighton Area firefighters faced bitter cold battling a fatal mobile home blaze early Sunday.

Taylor authorities opened a warming center at the Detroit suburb's recreation center.
