Girl Scouts Get Creative To Help Send Cookies, Cards And Clothing To Troops

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's cookie season - and for the second consecutive year - two local Girl Scouts are looking to help the troops.

Eleven-year-old Olivia Golembiewski and her 9-year-old sister Jade are once again hosting the "Valentines 4-R Troops" event at the Nino Salvaggio Marketplace's in Troy and Clinton Township reports WWJ's Chris Renwick.

Olivia says she can't wait start collecting for the troops.

"We're very excited," said Olivia,"we're collecting (gently) used clothing items, Target and Walmart gift cards so we can send to Operation Troop Aid, we are also collecting cash donations to send Girl Scout cookies and packages to our troops overseas."

Jade, who's been a Girl Scout for five years, says this has quickly become her favorite event to participate in. "We wanted to do more when we found out ... we just wanted to do more than send cookies, we wanted to help everyone."

The sisters hope to create 500 care packages to send to the troops overseas. The packages will include letters written for troop members as well.

The event runs Friday through Sunday.
