Iraqi Refugee In Michigan Accused Of Lying About Connections To ISIS
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - An Iraqi refugee living in Michigan is due in Federal Court in Detroit Friday on charges of lying to federal agents about his desire to join the terror group ISIS.
A federal criminal complaint says Al-Hamzah Mohammad Jawad was detained Tuesday by agents at Detroit Metro Airport, where he was scheduled to fly to Amman, Jordan. Officials became concerned when he couldn't explain why he bought a one-way ticket a day earlier.
According to the complaint, Jawad told FBI agents he was connected with violent extremists in Iraq, was traveling to Iraq to train with ISIS, and that he had sworn allegiance to the leader of ISIS.
When Jawad was pressed to confirm specific details of his story, he admitted to agents he had made the whole thing up.
Jawad's roommate has told agents he's been acting strangely in recent days.
The 29-year-old came to the U.S. in 2013 and currently lives in East Lansing.
