Tigers Agree To Terms With Joba Chamberlain
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers announced today that the club has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with righthanded pitcher Joba Chamberlain.
"We are pleased that Joba is returning to our ballclub," said Detroit Tigers President, CEO and General Manager David Dombrowski. "He did a solid job for us last year and his addition will strengthen our bullpen."
Chamberlain, 29, compiled a 2-5 record, a 3.57 ERA (63.0IP/25ER) and 59 strikeouts in 69 relief appearances for the Detroit Tigers during the 2014 season. Prior to the All-Star break, he posted a 1-3 record and a 2.63 ERA (37.2IP/11ER) over 41 appearances. Additionally, he ranked second among American League relievers with 29 holds in 2014.
Originally drafted by the Yankees in Compensation Round A (41st overall) of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Chamberlain has played a combined eight seasons at the major league level with the Yankees (2007-13) and the Tigers (2014), posting a 25-19 record, 3.81 ERA (507.2IP/215ER) and 505 strikeouts in 329 career appearances.
To create a spot on the 40-man roster, the Tigers have designated the contract of righthanded pitcher Chad Smith for assignment.
