Ambulance Stolen In Oakland County, Driven To Hospital; Suspect Being Questioned

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- Deputies with the Oakland County Sheriff's Department are questioning a man after an ambulance was stolen from the Commerce Township Fire Department on Friday.

Undersheriff Mike McCabe said that the ambulance was stolen from in front of the fire department and was later discovered about an hour later at the Huron Valley Hospital.

"Our aviation unit spotted it there [Huron Valley Hospital], they also spotted the guy who was walking away from the area who we're questioning now," McCabe said. "Whether he's the one who stole it or not remains to be seen, but he may have because the guy has serious mental health issues."

McCabe said that it is not yet clear how the thief got ahold of the keys, but they may have been left in the rig.

"That's under investigation, we're going to find out," McCabe said. "My understanding is that the keys were recovered in the ambulance so I'm guessing the keys were in it, but I don't know that for a fact."
