Man Faces Trial In Fatal Shooting Of Off-Duty Police Officer

DETROIT (AP) — A judge has ordered a 35-year-old man to stand trial on a first-degree murder charge in the shooting of an off-duty police officer and Iraq war veteran working as a security guard outside a Detroit bar.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office says a Detroit District Court judge ruled there's enough evidence to try Walter T. Jennings. First-degree murder carries an automatic penalty of life in prison without parole.

Authorities say that Jennings shot Roderick Jones Feb. 7. The 33-year-old was a reserve officer with Highland Park police and was working as a security guard at the Opyum Lounge.

Authorities say the former U.S. Army Ranger was shot multiple times after telling a man to leave the bar.

Jennings' is to appear in Wayne County Circuit Court March 9.
