Thousand View Sunken Crucifix Under Little Traverse Bay Ice
PETOSKEY, Mich. (AP) - About 1,000 people have turned out to get a peek at a sunken stone crucifix that lies at the bottom of Lake Michigan's Little Traverse Bay.
The monument to people who have died in water-related accidents is submerged about 20 feet down in the bay at Petoskey. The 1,850-pound white Italian marble cross is 11 feet long.
The figure of Jesus measures 5 feet, 5 inches.
It was first installed in 1962 and moved to its current location in 1984. Winter viewings are held when the ice is firm enough. Last year hazardous conditions and thick ice made viewing impossible.
TV station WPBN/WTOM says that spectators viewed the crucifix Saturday through holes in the ice under a tent on the lake at Bayfront Park.
