Michigan House Approves Bill Ending State Film Incentives

LANSING (AP) - The state House has approved a bill cutting off Michigan's film incentives, despite recent comments from the governor that he doesn't support an abrupt end to the program.

The bill, approved 58-51 Wednesday, would end the film incentive program effective with the new fiscal year Oct. 1. The program funds movies, TV and digital productions in the state.

The bill will now go to the Senate for consideration.

Gov. Rick Snyder said Tuesday he would prefer to see a "gradual ramp-down" of the program. He proposed allocating $50 million for it in the next fiscal year.

Film incentive opponents say the program hasn't created enough jobs to be worth keeping. Advocates say it's created good-paying jobs and is a model other states are following.
