Michigan State Police Officials Demonstrate Aerial Drone

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State Police officials have demonstrated the department's first authorized aerial drone designed to aid in investigations.

The Livingston Daily Press & Argus, Lansing State Journal and WILX-TV report the unmanned aerial vehicle was put through its paces for the media Wednesday at the state police training academy in Lansing. The demonstration included flying over a simulated crash on a test track.

State officials on Monday announced the Federal Aviation Administration's approval to use the drone, which had its first test last week investigating a fire near Jenison in western Michigan.

Four troopers have been trained to control the device.

They say the drone will only be flown in law enforcement situations and officials consulted with the American Civil Liberties Union to deal with potential privacy concerns.
