MDOT Updates Traffic App To Help Commuters Navigate Roadways

By Edward Cardenas

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has updated its Mi Drive traffic information app with improved graphics, connection to traffic cameras and construction filters.

The free app, available in the iTunes and Google Play stores, offers improved graphics, faster map loading, new map layer controls along with the ability to select and save favorite camera views directly on the map for quick reference.

The app also has a feature that allows users to sort construction searches by county and route.

"The Mi Drive app has been downloaded nearly 38,000 times, so we know motorists find it useful," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle, in a release. "If you haven't downloaded it yet, we hope you do so now. And remember to please use this app to check your route before leaving for your destination. We want everyone to remain safe and pay attention while they are driving."

The Mi Drive app is powered by intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technology, speed sensors, cameras, and cell phone data to provide motorists with real-time information about factors that can affect travel, according to the state.

Users will find real-time traffic camera views, real-time color-coded speeds on major routes, message boards, work zones, rest areas and Michigan Welcome Centers, MDOT carpool lots, and National Weather Service forecasts by city name or ZIP code.

Motorists can also provide updates about potholes they encounter, report traffic incidents and give roadway conditions on the app.

The Mi Drive site is available for personal computers and as a mobile version at www.michigan.gov/drive.

MDOT also plans to update the Mi Drive app as needed, and accepts users to use the "Contact Us" link on the app to submit questions, comments or suggestions about how to make the app work even better for them.
