Same-Sex Couples Married In Michigan Celebrate Anniversaries

FERNDALE, Mich. (AP) - Same-sex couples married during a brief window in Michigan when such unions were performed last year are celebrating anniversaries as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to consider a legal challenge to gay marriage bans.

About 300 marriages took place in four Michigan counties where clerks chose to open their doors to accommodate couples. Events are planned Sunday in Ingham, Oakland, Washtenaw and Macomb counties, including a gathering at a community center in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale.

April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse of Hazel Park are challenging Michigan's prohibitions on gay marriage and joint adoption by same-sex couples. They say they're pleased that the U.S. Supreme Court decided in January to take the case.

A judge ruled in their favor in March 2014, but an appeals court reversed the decision.
