Michigan Officials Urge Caution To Prevent Spring Wildfires
LANSING (AP) - As the snow melts and spring approaches, Michigan officials are urging caution to prevent wildfires.
Dan Laux of the state Department of Natural Resources says unsafe burning of dried-out leaves, brush and other debris during spring cleaning is a main cause of wildfires in Michigan. The DNR has responded to 10 wildfires totaling 69 acres this year.
Permits are required to burn brush and debris. Residents of the northern Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula can obtain a free permit online or by calling 866-922-2876.
In southern Michigan, people should contact their local fire department or township office.
Laux advises burning debris on cool, damp days with little wind, and in areas clear of vegetation. Keep water handy and never leave a fire unattended.
