Drivers In Metro Detroit Spend 63 Hours Per Year Stuck In Traffic

DETROIT (WWJ) - A new study shows that traffic congestion in metro Detroit is on the rise.

The annual Traffic Index from GPS company Tom Tom shows that traffic congestion is five percent worse in the Detroit-area than last year -- with the typical driver spending 63 hours per year stuck in traffic while going to and from work.

The study found that during peak traffic times in Detroit, a normally 30-minute drive will take you about 46 minutes. The worst commutes during the week take place on Thursday morning and Thursday evening, while Friday morning and Monday evening see the best commutes.

Detroit is only 29th when it comes to the most traffic-laden commutes in the United States. That title went to Los Angeles, followed by San Francisco and Honolulu.

The Tom Tom study highlights the impact of traffic congestion in over 200 cities around the world. Globally, the evening rush hour is the most congested time of day on virtually every road network. If you have to drive during rush hour, you can expect to spend double the time in the car, on average, stuck in traffic.

On the world scale, Detroit ranks 120 for most traffic congested city.
