State Police Use DNA To Identify Missing Girls' Remains

DETROIT (AP) — DNA has been used to identify the remains of two 14-year-old Detroit-area girls who went missing decades ago.

The recently created Michigan State Police Missing Persons Coordination Unit was able to determine that remains found in a landfill in 1992 belonged to Carla Tucker. Tucker last was seen in 1979.

Authorities also identified the remains of Bina Emery whose body was among several unidentified and buried in pauper's graves. Emery's body was pulled in 1988 from the Detroit River. Her mother provided her DNA last year in hopes of finding the girl.

The Tucker and Emery cases are not connected.

State police say a free DNA collection event is scheduled May 16 at the GM Renaissance Center in Detroit for anyone searching for a missing loved one.
