Pershing High School Receives $5K Grant For Baseball, Softball Programs

By Edward Cardenas

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - Comerica Bank and the Detroit Tigers surprised students and staff at Pershing High School in Detroit with a $5,000 grant for the baseball and softball programs at the school.

The presentation of the Grand Slam Grant at Pershing is the first of five Michigan high schools to receive the grant this week.

Recipients of this year's grants were selected from "impressive" applications from previous years, but were ultimately not selected for the grand prize.

"For the program's fifth anniversary, we decided to recognize schools that submitted terrific applications in the past but didn't take home the grand prize," said Michael T. Ritchie, president, Comerica Bank-Michigan, in a release.

The Comerica Bank Grand Slam Grant program was created in 2011 to help public high schools in Michigan create, expand or improve their baseball or softball programs.

Detroit Tigers outfielder Rajai Davis served as a celebrity judge on the Grand Slam Grant selection committee and will participate in a special on-field check presentation with representatives from the winning baseball and softball teams before the Detroit Tigers game Saturday.

Previous winners include Cass Technical High School, Lincoln Park High School, Detroit Renaissance High School, Holland High School, Kalamazoo Central High School, Mona Shores High School and Robichaud High School.
