Rocket Fiber Announces Details Of High-Speed Internet Service On New Website

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - The new Dan Gilbert-backed high-speed Internet network under construction in downtown Detroit has a new website with additional information about the service.

The launch of Rocket Fiber was announced in February, and will bring Internet service that is up to 100 times faster than the current residential average.

The website offers additional information about the service areas, the impact of faster service and additional background about the network.

"Rather than settle on a strategy of playing catch up with other cities, we decided to bring residents and business owners ultra-fast gigabit Internet that is up to 100 times faster than the average residential broadband connection," the company stated in a blog post. "This speed will give Detroit world-class connectivity and the opportunity to position itself as a competitive city of the future."

The network, which originates west of downtown Detroit, will initially serve residents, local government and businesses in downtown Detroit's Central Business District from M-10 to the west, I-75 to the north, I-375 to the east, and the Detroit River to the south.

According to a map on the site, further expansion could occur in the New Center, Woodbridge, Corktown, Eastern Market, Lafayette Park and Rivertown neighborhoods of Detroit.

By offering Internet service at 1,000 Mbps, Rocket Fiber users could download an iTunes album in less than a second. A normal service, with a speed of 10Mbps, could download the same album in one minute.

In addition to Internet services, Rocket Fiber will also provide television shows through its HDTV services.

Residential service will be $70 a month, and HDTV service pricing will be announced soon. Businesses and property managers are told to contact the company for a quote.

The service is expected to be online by late 2015.
