Detroit Police, Volunteers To Board Up Houses Near Elementary School

DETROIT (AP) — Police officers are working with members of the AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program to help fight blight and improve safety for children in a southwest Detroit neighborhood.

The officers and volunteers will board up about 20 vacant houses Saturday near Neinas Elementary to make routes taken by children to the school safer.

Volunteers also will clean and clear vacant lots.

Last fall, AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program members helped volunteers secure boards to houses near Clark Preparatory Academy on Detroit's east side.
