Trader Joe's & Al Fresco Brand Chicken Sausage Recalled Due To Possible Contamination
DETROIT (CBS Detroit/AP) - Trader Joe's customers who bought the chain's Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage are urged to throw it out amid concerns that the meat may be contaminated by pieces of plastic.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced this week that Massachusetts-based sausage maker Kayem Foods is recalling more than 59,000 pounds of the product.
The recall is for 12-ounce sausage packages sold at Trader Joe's stores nationwide with the case code 9605 and expiration dates of April 22, 25 and 29. Customers can return the product for a full refund at any Trader Joe's.
Also included in this recall are 8-ounce packages of al fresco brand "Apple Maple Fully Cooked Breakfast Chicken Sausage" with the case code 9709 and use by/freeze by dates of June 13 and 20, 2015. This brand is sold at Kroger, Meijer and other supermarkets in Michigan.
The problem was discovered after the firm received complaints from two consumers who found small pieces of plastic in the product, according to the USDA, but no one has eaten the recalled meat so far.
The is a remote chance of negative health effects if someone does, the USDA said.
