By Edward Cardenas

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - YouTube started with an 18-second video at a zoo 10 years ago today, and has now grown into viral sensation and destination for videos on the Internet.

The Internet video site now has more than 1 billion users who upload 300 hours of video every minute.

This content ranges from video blogs to music videos, cats playing the piano and clips from television shows.

The video also created the music stars such as Psy, whose Gangnam Style video became the first video to have 1 billion views (it now has over 2.3 billion views).

The video site is part of Google's family of companies. The tech company purchased it in 2006 for $1.65 billion.

"The YouTube team has built an exciting and powerful media platform that complements Google's mission to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful," Eric Schmidt, Chief Executive Officer of Google said at the time of purchase.

YouTube personalities such as Smosh and Fine Bros. have grown to be more popular than mainstream celebrities among U.S. teenagers, Variety reports.

Radio personalities also have a home on YouTube with highlights from the Valenti and Foster show posted on the CBS Detroit channel.
