Poll: Michigan Voters Overwhelmingly Want Lawmakers To Give Up Summer Vacation, Focus On Roads

LANSING (WWJ) Will state lawmakers be forced to give up their summer vacation to work out a road funding deal?

On the heels of Proposal One's defeat, WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick says a new EPIC-MRA poll finds that 85 percent of voters want Gov. Rick Snyder to call a special session for lawmakers this summer to craft a plan.

What should the plan include? The poll also found that 64 percent of people would support a one penny sales tax increase if the money went directly to improving roads.

Prop One, a complicated sales tax increase that would have contributed to road improvement, lost by a 4 to 1 margin Tuesday. Any other tax measure would have to come back to voters in November.

Skubick says lawmakers should be able to squeeze some short-term cash out of the budget, at least enough to give the state money to complete the road repairs planned for this summer.

"At this rate, nobody knows what's going to happen," Skubick said.
