Report Recommends Sharpshooters To Kill Deer In Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR (WWJ/AP) - A report released by Ann Arbor officials recommends hiring sharpshooters to kill deer in the city each winter.

The report now goes to City Council for consideration and follows a year of city discussions and study. Complaints from some residents about damage to landscaping and concerns about deer-vehicle crashes prompted officials to study the issue.

The report says complaints about deer are concentrated in the north and east sides of the city as well as areas along the Huron River. City code would need to be changed to allow sharpshooters to curb the deer population.

The report also recommends steps including implementing a citywide ban on feeding deer and efforts to track the size of the deer population.

The City of Ann Arbor completed two aerial surveys of the deer population on February 10 and March 6 this year. The first survey counted 116 deer and the second survey counted 168 deer.
