Grab A Paddle! Officials Highlight Belle Isle Kayaking, Canoeing Plans

DETROIT (AP) - The state and partner organizations are working to expand recreation opportunities for kayakers and canoeists at Detroit's Belle Isle.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition and other partners are announcing a new Detroit Heritage River Water Trail user guide on Tuesday. They also plan to discuss grant funding for new kayak and canoe launches.

An event is scheduled at the park's beach.

The second edition of the water trail map highlights Detroit-area paddling experiences such as those at Maheras-Gentry Park, Bishop Park, Elizabeth Park and Belanger Park.

On Tuesday, officials also will give updates about vendors at the island park in the Detroit River. Belle Isle last year became a state park as part of a cost-cutting effort for Detroit.
