3 Injured When SUV Comes Crashing Into Madison Heights Tanning Salon

MADISON HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Three people were hurt when a vehicle came crashing through the front window of a Madison Heights tanning salon Thursday.

Britney McAlpine was working at the front desk when the SUV hit a woman walking by before bursting into the building, on John R Road just south of 13 Mile.

"I just like slightly saw, in the blink of an eye, the car coming towards the building at a high rate of speed...and the woman that was walking on the outside of the building, I heard her scream, try to run in the other direction, and she had no time to get out of the way," McAlpine said.

The woman hit was 55-year-old Kathleeen Edwards who was picking up a pizza two doors down when she was struck — and knocked right through the glass.

Alpine ran to help.

"I made sure she that, obviously, she wasn't under the car," Alpine said. "Her whole body was visible, but she was bleeding, she was screaming for help, so I immediately found a phone and called 911."

Talking to WWJ's Stephanie Davis at the scene, Edwards' brother, Robert Elwart, said she's expected to be OK.

"She has a severely broken ankle and a large laceration, probably a fractured kneecap, and, you know,  just bruises and lacerations all over," he said.

The 77-year-old SUV driver and her passenger were also taken to the hospital, but their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

There was no immediate word on what may have led to the crash or if the driver will face charges.
