Police: Suspects In Custody In Connection With Deadly Carjacking
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit Police Chief James Craig telling reporters Tuesday that arrests have been made in a string of deadly carjackings over the holiday weekend.
Craig spoke from the site of the most recent fatal carjacking at a gas station near Gratiot and St. Aubin reports WWJ city beat reporter Vickie Thomas.
The attempted carjacking and shooting at the Sunoco Station in Detroit left a 31-year-old man dead.
"We have three of these suspects in custody and it's because of the great work by this team behind me - that we pulled together and literally, the investigators worked around the clock," said Craig.
The man, who was driving a Ford Mustang, was killed as he tried to run away from the suspects.
Craig referred to certain crime statistics which show carjackings have decreased 4 percent, from the same time a year ago.
"I'm confident now, compared to two years ago, when we first came in with this program that carjackings ... have really taken a tremendous drop, in gas stations, in businesses and overall, in general," said Craig.
"Year to date, when you talk about non-fatal shootings, when we started to see an incline we are actually starting to go into a decline."
A second carjacking occurred in the area of St. Joseph and Mitchell streets in Detroit where the carjacker stole the car and pistol whipped the victims.
In mid-May a man pulled a woman from her car and sped away with an infant in the back seat.
Just last week Craig detailed a new effort aimed at cracking down on illegal activities around city gas stations.
