DETROIT (WWJ) – A storm is brewing in metro Detroit.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the entire southeast Michigan region, in effect from 5 p.m. Saturday through 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Forecasters say rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected through Sunday, as an unusually moist air mass settles over lower Michigan.

Although the past couple weeks have been relatively dry, rainfall totals in excess of 2 inches will bring a threat of flooding — especially in the Detroit-area. Thunderstorms later Saturday could quickly produce torrential downpours, potentially leading to localized flash flooding.

Rainfall totals by Sunday evening are expected to range near 3 inches across much of the area, with locally higher amounts possible.

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. Citizens should keep an eye on the weather and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
