Authorities: Grosse Pointe Park Firefighters Injured When Roof Collapses

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (AP/WWJ) — Authorities say two firefighters have been injured while responding to a fire in suburban Detroit.

Crews from several departments responded late Sunday to a fire at Sunrise Sunset Saloon in Grosse Pointe Park.

The building itself was a total loss, firefighters said.

Chief David Hiller, the city's public safety director, says crews went inside the building in an attempt to extinguish the fire and a ceiling collapsed. He says one of the firefighters had a possible broken ankle and one was suffering from smoke inhalation.

Dewey says it was a close call for fire crews when a wall collapsed.

"They had no choice but to fight the flames from outside," Dewey said.

The fire also burned a second business, but crews kept it from spreading to nearby homes. Area roadways were shut down as crews fought the fire Monday morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire chief Dave Hiller said Monday morning they still have a lot of work to do.

"We've got some hot spots in here, we've got some stuff, we've got to protect the scene so we can get some people in here and make the building safe," Hiller said.
