Two Teens Struck By Minivan; 1 Dead, 1 In Critical Condition

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police say two teens were hit by a minivan Tuesday evening on eastbound Eight Mile Road near Evergreen.

A 14-year-old girl died of her injuries and a 15-year-old is in critical condition. The two girls were crossing Eight Mile when they were hit.

The girls are students at Henry Ford High School.

Mario Morrow, a school spokesman, told WWJ's Gary Lundy this is a tough tragedy to deal with.

"First and foremost our prayers are going out to the family and the students," he said. "The individual that is deceased and the individual that is in surgery now and the entire community - Henry Ford is a very close-knit school."

Morrow says grief counselors will be available for staff and students on Wednesday morning.

"We are going to be at school - all hands on deck. Our crisis management teams, administration, teachers, experts in the field to work with our teachers, our students and our parents because this is a tragedy," said Morrow.

Police say the driver of the minivan stopped. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
