Salma Hayek's 'The Prophet' Gets Michigan Debut, 3 Screenings

DETROIT (AP) - The animated feature film "The Prophet," co-produced by Salma Hayek, gets its Michigan debut - and three screenings - during the Arab Film Festival.

Opening night for the film, based on poems by Lebanese poet Khalil Gibran, is free to attend -- on Friday at 9:45 p.m. on the lawn of the Detroit Institute of Arts.

The film is also being presented as a ticketed event next Thursday at Dearborn's Arab American National Museum and June 13 at Ann Arbor's Michigan Theatre.

Hayek, who is of Lebanese descent, describes "The Prophet" as "a love letter to my heritage." It tells the story of a girl who finds the voice she lost through her friendship with a poet imprisoned for his ideas.

The festival is part of the Cinetopia Film Festival, which runs through June 14.
