Detroit Woman Injured In Shootout With Home Invasion Suspects
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police say a 34-year-old woman was injured during an exchange of gunfire with five people who were breaking into her east side home.
The incident happened early Tuesday morning in the 12400 block of Whitehill, in a largely abandoned neighborhood near Kelly and Moross roads.
The woman told police she heard someone breaking into her home, so she grabbed her gun and started shooting. The suspects returned fire, striking the woman in the leg. She was taken to St. John Hospital with what was described as a non-life threatening injury.
Matthew Greason, the woman's fiancé, said he was at work overnight when his future-wife was alerted by their guard dogs barking.
"She said five guys tried to come in and look for something to rob and she just ended up shooting at them and was able to get them back out of the house," Greason told WWJ's Mike Campbell.
The woman's brother, Corey Brown, said some of the suspects jumped through windows to escape the gunfire and one might have even been hit.
"She got one of them, you know, the other four got lucky," he said.
Brown hopes the incident sends a strong message to the suspects.
"We ready for you. That's what we want y'all to know. I don't care who's doing it, I'm not calling out no races, I'm not calling out no ages, nothing like that. If you break into our home, we're going to kill you. That's it. That's all," said Brown.
Police say no arrests have been made. An investigation is ongoing.
