ROYAL OAK (WWJ/AP) – Fire officials say a baby has been born in a car on an interstate highway in the Detroit area.

The Royal Oak fire department got a call around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday that a woman was giving birth in a vehicle on I-696.

Parts of the highway were shut down so firefighters could get to the scene. But by the time they arrived, the baby had already been born, with the baby’s father helping with the delivery.

Royal Oak firefighter Eric Scicluna told WXYZ-TV that he cut the baby’s umbilical cord and they went to the hospital.

The fire department says the baby, mother and father are all fine.
