Ex-Eastern Michigan Athlete Sentenced In Sexual Assault Case

YPSILANTI (WWJ/AP) - A former member of Eastern Michigan University's track and field team has been sentenced to eight months in jail in a sexual assault case.

Eli Burdette also was ordered Wednesday to be on probation for five years after earlier pleading guilty to fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct and aggravated domestic violence.

Two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct were dismissed.

Authorities say Burdette sexually assaulted a woman and prevented her from leaving her apartment in Ypsilanti in November. Burdette told the court it was a "terrible night" and he wants to serve his time and "be a productive member of society."

Burdette was a sophomore from Mansfield, Ohio, who competed in throws. He's no longer enrolled at Eastern.
